SAY SOMETHING, ANYTHING with una bella artista: Anna Zappoli
Anna Zappoli is an artist and a poet from the Province of Catania in Italy, which makes her amazing right off the bat. She could be saying anything and her voice would sound like sweet poetry or music. As it turns out, though, the words she does use are filled with artistic wisdom and incredible input on the discipline it takes to be a writer or an artist. Then (by request) she speaks some Italian.
This episode is unique because it merges poetry with, for lack of a better word, therapy. By drawing on experience, Anna Z provides guidance on being open to the world and being careful not to pollute our minds with thoughts of inadequacy. Which, in turn, allows us to create wonderful art. It’s about inspiration, happiness, self-healing, connectedness. And the way she gives this advice is poetic in itself: Starting with the simplicity of flower-filled wheelbarrows throughout a neighborhood and eventually comparing the beauty of that to the unique beauty each individual has to share.
Advice is as simple as: “When the inspiration comes make sure you have a piece of paper and a pencil.” To as complex as telling people to let all feelings and energies in, good or bad, because it’s “all beautiful in the end, because you have a product of that moment that made you feel that way.”
Oh, and when it comes to the coffee thing, she grew up on espresso and cappuccino, but when they’re not made a certain way (aka if they don’t meet the Italian standard) then she sticks to good old American coffee. And one thing she has in common with a fellow podcast guest: NO DECAF.
