From Somewhere Else: Puna’s newest poetry book is bellissimo
After months of organizing a typewritten manuscript, choosing the title, the inside artwork and the cover, it’s finally here. From Somewhere Else is Anna Zappoli’s first book of poetry to be published, and just like all her other art, she truly poured her heart and soul into it.
Though English is her second language, Anna has no problem lyrically articulating her transition from her big family in Catania, Italy to the unknowns of the United States. It’s about missing home, but also embracing the unknown. Scared at times, but always tinted with optimism and wonderment. Observing the things, people, places, smells that differentiate an old life from a new one.
ITALIAN HEART
Writing English
with my Italian heart
in a baker kitchen
last night pots and pans
sat there quite while
voices spoke aloud waiting
my turn my moment
and when the voice came
no sound I hear too soon
from visiting the land of love
where confusion is my reassurance
of existence and miss you mom
remembering the moments
of when the sun embraced sky ripped
tangerine everyday make your bed
in white linens and sweet aroma
