Ying Wu Features at Palabra!
PALABRA
an evening of poetry hosted by Ted Washington
Featured reader is Ying Wu
Ying Wu lives on a sailing catamaran in the San Diego Bay. She is a researcher at the Institute of Neural Computation of UC San Diego, where she studies EEG brain dynamics mediating creativity and problem solving. She also hosts the best second Friday gelato poetry and open mic series in Southern California. She writes poetry with her spare cognitive resources while fulfilling the many obligations of modern adult life. Her recent work has been featured in Serving House Journal, Synesthesia Anthology, Blue Heron Review, Summation, The San Diego Poetry Annual, and The Poetry Superhighway.
Ying Wu: “As a child, I knew I was destined to write. I loved making up stories and playing pretend, and there was always some kind of narrative running in my head. Over time, however, it became clear, little by little, that I was incapable of achieving even the most basic elements of a literary work. Summiting Mt. Everest seemed easier than constructing a plot – so novels and plays were out of the question. Short stories were off the table as well – my characters always felt false somehow. Real life seemed simultaneously too dull and too complex for a memoir. Poetry was the only option left.”
After the featured reading we will have an open mic for anyone who wants to read. Everyone is welcome to come and share a poem, song lyrics, reading or a short story or just bring your ears for listening and enjoy the evening. Original poetry is always appreciated. Everyone needs some place to speak their minds and Palabra is that place. We are an inclusive and supportive group that aim to provide a safe, nonjudgmental, positive environment, so all talent levels are welcome.
Doors open at 6:30pm and Poetry starts at 7:00pm sharp! We will have a sign-up sheet available at the counter. Each poet will speak for 3-5 minutes each so that everyone who wants to read can have a chance! Palabra poetry night will be every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month.
