Gobo Trio is a chamber group formed to perform Nathan Hubbards wide reaching compositions, specifically the 13 Miniatures, which was composed for this group. Whittaker, Taylor and Hubbard have a long history of performing together, ranging from Whittaker debuted Hubbards Song Cycle in 2005 to the trio performing as part of the Skeleton Key Orchestra.
Tonight the Trio is happy to collaborate with poet Shannon Perkins. Perkins is well known in both the San Diego slam poetry and hiphop worlds, and Hubbard and Perkins have a long (15 year) history of performing together in the group Ogd_S(11) Translation Has Failed. Perkins is also featured on multiple Hubbard recordings, most notably “Furiously Dreaming”, which won a San Diego Music Award for “Best Jazz Album 2017”.
The performance will do its best to push the boundaries of “poet with backup band”, “poetry as lyrically inspiration”, and many points in-between. The Trio will also debut the 13 Miniatures as well as three brand new musical settings of Dorothea Grossmans poetry.
“Gobo” can be a screen placed in front of a theatre light, or a baffle placed between musicians in a studio, but mostly its the Japanese word for Burdock root, that delicious crunchy orange veggie in your sushi. Different definitions on background and meaning serve as a good starting point for tonight.
After the features reading we will have an open mic for anyone who wants to read. Everyone is welcome to come and share a poem, song lyrics, reading or a short story or just bring your ears for listening and enjoy the evening. Original poetry is always appreciated. Everyone needs some place to speak their minds and Palabra is that place. We are an inclusive and supportive group that aim to provide a safe, nonjudgmental, positive environment, so all talent levels are welcome.
Doors open at 6:30pm and Poetry starts at 7:00pm sharp! We will have a sign-up sheet available at the counter. Each poet will speak for 3-5 minutes each so that everyone who wants to read can have a chance! Palabra poetry night will be every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month.
