Al Howard Features at Palabra!
Thursday June 22nd Alfred Howard will be our featured reader. Alfred is the co-founder of the Redwoods Music, a San Diego Record Label and Collective. He pens lyrics for eight bands and performs junk yard percussion with six bands currently (Birdy Bardot, Cardinal Moon, Dani Bell and the Tarantist, The Heavy Guilt, The Midnight Pine, Rebecca Jade and the Cold Fact). His unique experience of being a black man in a mostly white city, suffering from the mysterious illness of lymes disease, and the son of a prolific black female artist have given him the perspective to write from a place of humor and humanity. Born in New Jersey, he grew up a self-proclaimed nerd and outsider. In his early 20s transforming into a spoken word artist caravanning with musicians all across the county before finally setting roots in San Diego. He toured as Alfred Howard and K23 Orchestra, were he made connections with the music community and players that follow him to this day. He reached local celebrity status with The Heavy Guilt and when he released his book, The Autobiography of No One, a collection of short stories reflecting his life as a record store clerk and the many people he’s encountered over the course of his life.
After Alfred’s reading we will have an open mic for anyone who wants to read. Everyone is welcome to come and share a poem, song lyrics, reading or a short story or just bring your ears for listening and enjoy the evening. Original poetry is always appreciated. Everyone needs some place to speak their minds and Palabra is that place. We are an inclusive and supportive group that aim to provide a safe, nonjudgmental, positive environment, so all talent levels are welcome.
Doors open at 6:30pm and Poetry starts at 7:00pm sharp! We will have a sign-up sheet available at the counter. Each poet will speak for 3-5 minutes each so that everyone who wants to read can have a chance! Palabra poetry night will be every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month.
