PALABRA
an evening of poetry hosted by Ted Washington
Viet Mai is this week’s featured artist. Viet Mai is an educator and poet from San Diego, CA. Upon finding his voice through spoken word poetry, Mr. Viet has connected with community leaders throughout San Diego and other cities to inspire young people, promote civic engagement, celebrate art and culture, and elevate social consciousness. Highlights include:
• 2017 National Poetry Slam Championship, San Diego PoetrySLAM Team
• 2016 Award of Merit, California Association of Teachers of English
• 2015 Special Commendation, The City of San Diego Race and Human Relations Commission
• 2014 Facilitator of the Year, Aaron Price Fellows Program
Mr. Viet currently serves as a Program Facilitator with the Village of Promise Collective Mentoring Program, and as an Independent Consultant, specializing in Education, Data Analysis, and Community Development.
The vKnowledge Collective is Mr. Viet‘s latest venture; a collaborative community consulting network designed to impact Education and Mentorship, Health and Wellness, and Social Entrepreneurship. He hopes to figure out what all that means while pursuing his Master’s in Social Innovation at the University of San Diego, Kroc School of Peace Studies. For more information visit vknowledge.org and vietmai.com.
After Mr. Viet’s reading we will have an open mic for anyone who wants to read. Everyone is welcome to come and share a poem, song lyrics, reading or a short story or just bring your ears for listening and enjoy the evening. Original poetry is always appreciated. Everyone needs some place to speak their minds and Palabra is that place. We are an inclusive and supportive group that aim to provide a safe, nonjudgmental, positive environment, so all talent levels are welcome.
Doors open at 6:30pm and Poetry starts at 7:00pm sharp! We will have a sign-up sheet available at the counter. Each poet will speak for 3-5 minutes each so that everyone who wants to read can have a chance! Palabra poetry night will be every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month.
