On Friday, July 26, Poetry & Art Series 2013 features a $500 cash prize poetry slam competition open to the public. The San Diego Slam Team is headed to Boston on August 12 to represent San Diego in the National Poetry Slam. Part of the proceeds for the night will go to the team for their travels. This arts and culture event takes place in the Museum of the Living Artist, 1439 El Prado, Balboa Park. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for snacks and music, and the show starts at 7 p.m. Members are free, $7 at the door or bring wine to share and get in free.
On July 26, all participating poets will compete in the first round. Ten will compete in the second (elimination) round. And the top 3 will go head to head in the third round to take the dough: $300 for 1st Place; $150 for 2nd; and $50 for 3rd.
Writers/artists who would like to participate in the slam can get their names in the hat ahead of time at email@example.com or sign in on the night of the show. Fifteen spots will be decided by lottery.
What is a poetry slam? Poetry Slam, Inc. explains: A poetry slam is a competitive event in which poets perform their work and are judged by members of the audience. Typically, the host or another organizer selects the judges, who are instructed to give numerical scores (on a zero to 10 or one to 10 scale) based on the poets’ content and performance.
Gill Sotu and Ben Chung will provide live music. There will be treats and beverages as always. Please contact host, Michael Klam, with any questions: 619-957-3264 (cell) or 619-236-0011 (museum).
