Palabra featuring Jim Ruland
I never envisioned hosting a poetry event on a regular basis but that is what is going on now. Chris and Sony of La Bodega Gallery asked me to put together a poetry reading series at their gallery. I was willing to help find someone to do the gig for them and suggested many qualified people. They however wanted me to do it. I was hesitant. There is a lot of work involved that goes on behind the scenes as is the case in most productions. I didn’t think I had the time nor the drive to do a good job. I consulted my friends as I often do, and they all agreed that I would be good at this and should do the hosting. Here we go:
Our first featured artist at Palabra is Jim Ruland!
I’ve attended a few of the Vermin On The Mount readings that Jim hosts, he has an incredible speaking voice and I look forward to hearing him read as opposed to introducing others.
Jim is the co-author of My Damage with Keith Morris, founding member of Black Flag, Circle Jerks and OFF! (Da Capo 2016) and the author of the award-winning novel Forest of Fortune (Tyrus Books 2014) and the short story collection Big Lonesome (Gorsky Press 2005). He is the books columnist for San Diego CityBeat, a member of the Golondrina arts collective in Barrio Logan, and runs the Southern California-based reading series Vermin on the Mount—now in its thirteenth year.
After Jim’s reading we will have an open mic for anyone who wants to read. Everyone is welcome to come and share a poem, song lyrics, reading or a short story or just bring your ears for listening and enjoy the evening. Original poetry is always appreciated. Everyone needs some place to speak their minds and Palabra is that place. We are an inclusive and supportive group that aim to provide a safe, nonjudgmental, positive environment, all talent levels are welcome.
Doors open at 6:30pm and Poetry starts at 7:00pm sharp! We will have a sign-up sheet available at the counter. Each poet will speak for 3-5 minutes each so that everyone who wants to read can have a chance! Palabra poetry night will be every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month.
